What does "Payout totals need review" mean? (Shopify)

What it means when a Shopify payout shows Payout totals need review (formerly Inconsistent Shopify Payout), and what to do.

Sometimes a Shopify payout shows Needs review on the Payouts page. This means Taxomate found that the transaction data from Shopify does not add up to the total payout amount for that period.

Open the payout. You see Payout is on hold or Payout totals need review. The notice shows the difference, for example: "Shopify paid $X. The payout lines add up to $Y, a difference of $Z."

The difference is usually due to an order change processed after Shopify made the payout. In this case, a manual adjustment in your accounting software may be needed to match the order change.

Do not send the payout until the totals are confirmed. If you do not know of any order change, select Contact support on the payout. Use Copy payout ID to include the ID in your message.

What to do

  1. Do not send the payout. Automatic sending also skips it.

  2. Find the amount that Shopify paid (in Shopify, or on your bank statement). Compare it with the amounts in the notice.

  3. If the payout page offers Rebuild from Shopify data under More actions, select it. A rebuild checks the totals again. If the source data now agrees, the hold clears.

  4. If the notice stays, select Copy payout ID and Contact support. Add the amount Shopify paid and the two amounts in the notice. You cannot clear this hold yourself.

The cause is not always an order change. In 2026, support found cases where Taxomate counted a charge twice (for example duties or import charges that were already in the order total). Support fixed these cases and rebuilt the payouts that were not sent. Payouts that were already sent were not changed.

If you already sent the payout with a difference: the difference stays in your books. Ask your accountant to post the difference to the clearing account or bank-fee account. Do not delete a reconciled entry to fix a few cents.

The same notice can appear for eBay, Etsy and other payouts. The steps are the same. See "What does this settlement status mean?" for the other statuses.
